Hi John,
We have brought a number of stags from John and without exception they have all shifted well and gone on to perform as a quality sires.
Both the paddock and shed temperament has been excellent, and we appreciate John’s honest assessment of a stags strengths when selecting a new sire.

Hi John
“Xcell Breeding Services Ltd has had the pleasure in being able to collect semen from ‘Sonny Bill’, an outstanding bodied stag with an excellent temperament, being one of the quietest stags we have dealt with; a trait that I believe adds value to his already high BV for venison production”

Two Year Average Velvet Weights Go From 2kg to 3kg
My wife Phyllis and myself have been dealing with John Bates at Canterbury Imported Red Deer Stud since 2002, when we bought the first of our champion English deer ‘Murchison’, who went on to win the 4 year section of the National Velvet Competition cutting 7.6kg SA. In later years we purchased a share of another champion Thomas Albert Son ‘Buller’ cutting 11.89kg SA and was people’s choice award winner at the North Island show. This year Buller (2009) cut over 15kg SA. The Thomas Albert line not only produces outstanding beam but importantly the length of antler between the bey and tray is right up there. The exceptional length of antler has allowed us to come back in with the shorter heavy beamed multi-pointers which has not been detrimental to the overall antler structure.
Over the years we have not only purchased breeding stags but also velveters for the trophy paddock. In all cases these stags have continued to develop in the antler year after year. In our opinion the C.I.R.D.S deer have had the best shifting ability of any animals we have bought. In other words these stags have not been pumped full of protein and additives at the two year stage.
C.I.R.D.S Warnham hinds have been added to the breeding herd on several occasions. In all cases they have arrived in good condition, fawned, and conceived again the following year. The C.I.R.D.S Warnhams have the genetics for excellent antler structure, are very fertile and a pleasure to handle.
The addition of Murchison and Buller to the breeding herd has lifted our 2yr old average from 2kg to 3kg per stag.

Cribb Farming bases itself on the rolling hills of Oxford in North Canterbury, with another finishing block on the flats south of Oxford. Our sole focus is Meat Production. Under the guidance of Terry Beardsmore we have gone about the building of our hind herd, using both maternal lines and high breed value stags.
In January 2009 we started using the genetics of Canterbury Imported Red Deer Stud just out of Christchurch.
Cribb Farming initially purchased a Sonny Bill spiker along with Sonny Bill semen. We were able to split the straws and back up the AI mob with the spiker. (Big Ears EBV 23.74). Of the forty hinds in the AI mob 100% got in calf to either the AI or Big Ears.
Apart from the savings having such good stags, we were especially pleased with the temperament of the C.I.R.D.S Easterns. As most of us know it is very difficult to breed for all significant traits. We are grazing John’s weaner hinds here in Oxford and are amazed just how quiet the temperament of these girls are.
Bernice,Tom, Terry and myself find John Bates straight up and to the point, with no hidden agendas.
