Canterbury Imported Red Deer Stud was launched in 1994 with a plan to build an outstanding hind herd of international excellence and breed them only to sires of the highest quality. We selected these hinds and designed their subsequent matingd with an emphasis on soundness, temperament, growth rates, weaning weights, velvet weights and performance of the male oofspring back through the pedigrees on the dam side.
Canterbury Imported Red Deer Stud has based its Eastern herd around the well proved hinds 12, 31, 41, 43, 44, 45, 46 and 47, along with their daughters and granddaughters. The Warnham herd is based around the offspring of the pure imports 7, 17, 34, 35 and 3126.
Canterbury Imported Red Deer Stud believe the best way to improve profit is to put another couple of kilos onto each carcass or velvet head. Both genetics nand management improvements are the first step towards better fawning and progeny growth rates. Genetic improvements on top of good management will yield better returns.
Canterbury Imported Red Deer Stud specialise in breeding and selection of genetics most suitable for producing large fast growing animals which calve early, and very fertile, quiet and produce large velvet heads. On this note, our hind herd is culled ruthlessly without compromise.
Warnham Park deer were chosen because of their long standing records for heavy antler production. At Warnham Park, England, stags have been bred and selected for their antler preformance for over 100 years. As a result they have acquired a very high heritability factor for velvet genetics.
Eastern Deer, in my opinion, are fastest growing of the red deer in New Zealand. One of the challenges facing the industry is to supply high priced markets with premium chilled product for 12 month of the year. What we want is animals that can be grown flat-out for vension through to 24 months without going over-fat, and along with early calving this is where the Easterns come into their own. Over-fat grades are severly penalised
